We returned home yesterday from our Christmas trip to Tokyo and Seoul! Our 3-day stop in Tokyo allowed us to meet with old friends, Atsushi and Yumi Okado and their children Rico and Ray -- definitely the trip highlight. Our day with them was packed with such wonderful sights and cultural experiences!
First stop was an appointment for the kids to be dressed in traditional Japanese kimonos...what a treat! They even got to wear them as we visited the nearby Sensoji Temple, which made it feel even more authentic!
Then we followed Yumi on an afternoon of sightseeing by way of the very intricate Tokyo Subway system. We were so thankful to have her along!
Here's the subway map (yikes!)...
At the modern Tokyo Temple, built in 1958 with its historic neighbor, Zojoji Temple, erected in 1598.....both pretty amazing!
We happened to see a Shinto monk processional along the way...
And then we visited the beautiful Imperial Palace...
And the highlight of the day was having Rico and Ray join us for a traditional Japanese Meal -- what an experience!
Rico taught Addie some origami:)...
We also did a bit of adventuring of our own within the city. We were able to stay our first night in a traditional Ryokan style hotel, complete with tatami mats and sliding doors. They even had traditional robes we could try on in their lobby!:)
A few of the Ueno Park and Zoo area...complete with giant pandas (and one of the oddest and meanest storks we have ever seen)!
We got a morning glimpse of Mt. Fuji from our hotel room!
And a few other shots of food and fun....
We finished our Tokyo trip with a day at Disney -- a perfect finale to a wonderful three days!
Thank you again Okado family -- we will never forget our day spent in Tokyo with your family. Now we hope you visit us in Bangkok so we can repay your generosity!
