Plain of Jars

Phonsavan is located about 6 hours southeast of Luang Prabang and was the next stop on our Laos journey. It is home to the Plain of Jars, thousands of ancient stone jars scattered in clusters throughout this particular region. Most archaeologists agree they were used as prehistoric burial urns and together they definitely make a creepy/cool facade. The kids loved the beautiful countryside of the area (we even hiked through a herd of cows to get to one site) and the weather was just beautiful. Unfortunately, Phonsavan was an area heavily hit during the Vietnam War, there are designated "MAG" safe paths for touring the jar sites. Reportedly, there were over 75 million unexploded ordinances left throughout Laos after the war ended.

Here are some pictures...it was an amazing day!

And one thing I forgot to mention is the motion sickness involved in reaching this part of Laos. We drove 6 hours in a minivan through the windiest mountain road to reach the city and then had a stormy 45 minute return flight to reach Vientiane. Thank goodness for the Air Asia air sickness bags!:) Here is a picture of the Phonsavan airport and plane (we heard chickens and typewriters as we waited to board)....

And a shot of our 30 minute delay on the road trip to Phonsavan for mountain-top construction (we're still in our pajamas because it was about 7:30 am!)

And some well-deserved pizza when we finally made it back to Vientiane!

Jen, you are SO much braver than me! There is no way I would ever have driven that long in a mini-van and then taken an airplane from an airport that had chickens in it. Love the pictures. Miss you!
